Belfast City Hall wedding photography

Alexandra & Ravi, Belfast City Hall

If you're considering a Belfast City Hall wedding, you’re probably exploring a style of day that looks a little different from a traditional venue setup. As a wedding photographer who's had the privilege of capturing several City Hall weddings, I wanted to share a few things I’ve noticed from being part of them.

Why choose a Belfast City Hall wedding?

You can be unapologetic about your guest list

City Hall weddings often involve smaller guest lists. Many I’ve photographed have fewer than 50 people, and some are even more intimate, with just the couple and their two witnesses. In practice, it means you don’t have to stress about inviting everyone you know. There’s also more time to chat with each guest, and enjoy quieter moments throughout the day.

A flexible structure to the day

One of the things couples often enjoy is how adaptable the day can be. You might have your ceremony at City Hall and then head to a favourite restaurant, bar, or another venue to continue the celebrations. Some keep things simple, others build in more traditional elements, it’s a format that works in lots of different ways.

Great variety for photos

Belfast City Hall offers a really strong mix visually, from its interiors to the surrounding grounds. Within a short distance, you also have access to very different backdrops, the Cathedral Quarter for something more urban, or spots like Botanic Gardens if you’d like to include some greenery as well. It gives you a lot of variety without needing to travel far.

Straightforward for guests

A city centre location can make logistics easier for guests, particularly if people are travelling or staying overnight. Transport, accommodation, and venues are all close together, which can help the day flow more smoothly.

Flexibility in how the budget is used

For some couples, this type of wedding can allow for more choice in how the budget is allocated. That might mean focusing on food, music, photography, or planning something special afterwards, it really depends on what matters most to you.

What to Expect at Your City Hall Ceremony

Choosing Your Ceremony Room

Belfast City Hall has a couple of different ceremony rooms to choose from, and you’ll decide which suits you best when you meet with your Registrar. The rooms are beautifully decorated, so there’s usually very little need for additional styling or décor.

Guest Arrival and Pre-Ceremony Photos

Guests can enter the room around 15 minutes before the ceremony begins, which gives everyone time to settle in. If you’d like some pre-ceremony photos, there’s also the option to arrive via the back of City Hall by the fountain. This quieter spot works really nicely for those moments beforehand.

Adding Personal Touches

City Hall ceremonies allow for a range of personal touches. You can include music for walking down the aisle, readings from guests, or other elements that feel right for you. There’s plenty of scope to shape the ceremony in a way that reflects what you’d like it to be.

Indoor Photography

After the ceremony, there’s around 15 minutes available for photos inside City Hall. I’m very familiar with the best spots, so we can use that time efficiently and keep things feeling relaxed. We’ll usually finish with a group photo on the stairs before heading outside.

Outdoor Photography Opportunities

Once outside, there’s a great variety of locations to work with. The front archway, the gardens, and the area around the Titanic Memorial Garden all offer lovely backdrops and a nice mix of settings for your photos.

Tips for Your Belfast City Wedding from a Photographer

Plan your day around light

The best light at City Hall is typically in the late morning or late afternoon. In summer months, evening light can be absolutely stunning. Planning your ceremony time with photography in mind makes a real difference to your images. We can work together to come up with the best timeline to suit you.

Every season works beautifully

Each season brings something special to Belfast city weddings. Autumn offers golden light and dramatic skies. Winter brings cosy, intimate vibes and the city's festive atmosphere. Spring and summer give longer days and softer light. You don't need to wait for "perfect" weather. Some of my favourite images have been taken on overcast days... which we're well used to in this country!

Give yourselves time for photos

I typically suggest allowing at least 45 minutes to an hour for photos after your ceremony. This gives us time to explore a few locations without feeling rushed. These are the main formal photos you'll have from your day, and they're worth taking time over.

Dress for the city

Consider that you'll be walking on cobblestones and city streets. Comfortable shoes (or a backup pair) can make a big difference. That said, I've photographed plenty of brides in heels navigating Belfast streets beautifully. It's absolutely doable.

Trust your untraditional choice

Some couples worry that a City Hall wedding might feel "less than" a traditional big venue wedding. From my experience photographing these weddings, they feel just as special, just as emotional, and just as memorable.

FAQs

How do I arrange a Belfast City Hall wedding?

For all the official details on booking your ceremony, costs, and legal requirements, visit the Belfast City Council website. They'll have the most up-to-date information on availability, pricing, and what you need to arrange. I'd recommend getting in touch with them early, especially if you're hoping for a weekend or peak season date.

How long should we allow for photography?

We can capture your arrival before the ceremony, then we have 15 minutes inside of City Hall afterwards. Allow another 15 minutes for family and group photos on the grounds. If you want couple portraits around Cathedral Quarter, or Botanic Gardens etc, give us an extra hour at least. This means you'll get a lovely variety of backdrops without feeling rushed.

What are our options for afterwards?

Belfast has some brilliant Reception venue options close to the City Hall...The Chubby Cherub, House in Botanic, Flame, The Merchant, AMPM, Margot, etc. All of them work beautifully for intimate celebrations with great food and a relaxed vibe. The key is choosing somewhere that suits your style and guest numbers - most city centre restaurants are happy to accommodate small wedding parties.
