Just jotting down some thoughts as I’m sitting here editing on a rainy day and prepping for my next wedding at Drenagh Estate ❤️ This time of year, the days are shorter, darker, and rain is more likely to make an appearance. But honestly, from one autumn/winter bride to another, if you’re worried about bad weather on your wedding day, don’t be! Let me share a little personal experience…
I got married in October 2021, and I still remember laying in bed, listening to the rain bounce off the windows before my alarm even went off. It was a dark, dreary morning, and we had every light in the room on just so we could see while getting ready. I kind of accepted that we weren’t going to get the nice beach photos that day that I always envisioned. As someone who values photos (photography was my top investment for my own wedding), I was a bit bummed. It turned out that by the time the portraits part of the day came around, the skies were so dark and moody and we got some incredible shots that became my absolute favorites from the whole day. We even made it to the beach that evening and ended up in the water, dress, shoes, and all!
Looking back, it’s a perfect reminder that your wedding day is what you make of it. Rain and cloudy skies actually create this soft, flattering light that adds a magical feel to photos, making colors pop in a way that sunny days rarely do. Funny enough, most photographers prefer overcast skies as bright sun creates harsh shadows that can be tricky to work with. When the weather isn’t perfect, some of the best, most genuine moments happen—so try to go with the flow, and the photos will turn out better than you’d ever imagined.
If the weather has you concerned, here are a few tips: bring along some clear umbrellas for you and your bridal party (they’re way less distracting in photos than dark umbrellas), pick a sheltered spot if you can, like a forest—the colors of the trees look stunning—and remember, it rarely rains all day, so there’s usually some time to sneak outside. If you’re game, I’m totally up for capturing a rainy, adventurous moment outside. You only have to say the word!
